25 Ways to Be Patriotic
82
Are you patriotic? Ordinarily, you might not have to consider the question, unless it happens to be the season between Memorial Day and Labor Day in the United States, or if you are running for President. What is "patriotism," and why is it so hard to define? Some might call it a demonstrated love of country. Others claim it to be pride of the place we call home. Push it further and I know of people that say that patriotism demands support of our elected officials, no matter the course of their actions or the outcomes.
How can you show that you are patriotic?
How Can Kids Show Their Patriotism?
The potentially thorny issues of patriotism need not concern young children. All they want to do is celebrate the summer, which usually involves waving of the red-white-and-blue. Here are 10 ways that your kids can celebrate living in America:
- Wear a Flag T-Shirt (many styles available at Wal-Mart, Target, Old Navy and more)
- Wave hand-held flags - craft stores carry these in bulk
- Go to the library or book store and read about our Founding Fathers and Mothers!
- Decorate a wagon with red, white and blue streamers and/or balloons and have a neighborhood parade
- Learn the words to the Star Spangled Banner, the National Anthem of the United States
- Make special treats in the kitchen and decorate with red and blue sprinkles (cupcakes or rice crispy treats are easy)
- Have a "Safe and Sane" fireworks display (parents or adults in charge and supervising)
- Make your own blue and/or red popsicles (try using Kool-Aid or juice)
- Print out and color free American flag pictures
- Have your children write a list of what their country means to them (or draw a picture)

11 More Ways Adults Can Show Patriotism
With respect to adults, one need not wear patriotism on their sleeve (or T-shirt, or even lapel). How you feel about your country is a private affair, much like religion, that is best not discussed or debated. If you enjoy the festivities, then by all means, there are many ways in which you can show your love of country to the world this time of year! Continuing the list from above, these include:
- Hoisting a flag or posting one on your home or apartment
- Declaring your patriotism on bumper sticker(s) on your car
- Fastening mini-flags to your car antennas
- Buying and wearing your own flag t-shirt (to match those of your kids)
- Outfitting the dog and/or cat in red white and blue collars and leashes, particularly if you have no children
- Participating in a 4th of July Pet Parade (or other similar local parade)
- Participating in an eating contest - yes, this is the ultimate in gluttony. How many hot dogs can YOU put away in 5 minutes?
- Spending inordinate amounts of money on fireworks so you can literally watch it burn
- Overeating, drinking too much and sleeping in the following day (praise heaven for 3-day holiday weekends)
- Inadvertently creating red and white stripes on your shoulders where you miss with the sunscreen (yeah, sure, it was intentional)
- Stopping for just a moment to remember why and how we celebrate our National Holidays
Supporting the Troops is Patriotic
Patriotism endures far beyond just a single day in July (here in America), or even the summer season stretching from Memorial to Labor Day. Without the current threat of the draft, military service is a choice these days. Some would say that the honor of being a "patriot" may have even lost some of its luster with the Gulf conflicts and other strategies of the past 15 years. But just because you may question our government's actions, or even distrust some of our elected officials, does not mean you are inherently unpatriotic. We must remember that one of the primary things that makes this nation great - our freedom itself - is the ability to express discontent without fear of arrest. So perhaps, even if you are not feeling particularly patriotic this year, you can remember that, because of this great system put in place over 225 years ago, we can each celebrate the nation's birthday in our own ways.
For that, I am both grateful and full of patriotic pride.

And... it is the very core of American patriotism to speak out when he or she feels something is wrong in the government.
Wonderful Hub!!!
This is a great hub...
Wonderful hub! So thoughtful! For more patriotism, check out my http://hubpages.com/hub/Ten-Patriotic-Movies, they'll definitely bring out the patriotic fervor in all of us! Best!
Wow very good hub new day, leaving with family to celabrate the 4th when I get back i'm gonna come back and check this excellent hub till then new day! ps you can delete this comment I'll have much better comment later.
What a great 4th of July article and ideas I hadn't thought of, either.
I love this! These should be followed all year round.... as someone who has very dear loved ones serving our country overseas, these types of posts mean a great deal to me =)
Very nice hub.
Has almighty created only America? I thank Him for the whole of the World in general and my motherland in particlular. I was taught in my childhood that if I dont respect any body else's mother that means I don't respect my own mother.
Excellent hub. Lots of great idea and good reminders.
you r right if i don't respect my body i don;t respect myself.
thanks you helped me out alot
hello i need help with my home work please write back dawn bowers
America needs more of your kind, New Day. I am not yet an American citizen but in 4 months time barring any unforeseen problem, I might be and here's hoping I can become a deserving son of America too.
The most patriotic thing a person can do, IMHO, is to remember why America is America - the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution and the inherent concepts they stand for. Flags are great, but only because of what's behind their meaning. Thanks for a excellent hub!
i love it so hart warming
thanks i'm writing a report and this really helps thanx a lot
Great Hub! I've done my part for patriotism. I was married during the bi-centennial, and, both of my sons were born on the 4th of July, five years apart.
This sucks! it was no help what so ever!
My idea of being a patriot is a little different. (1)I believe I should vote for only those candidates that promise to abide by the oath they take and vote for only constitutional principle. (2)I support our troops by encouraging our President to stop trying to be the policeman of the world and bring our troops home immediately from Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Germany etc. (3)
True patriots encourage our leaders to abolish the private Federal Reserve Banking cartel that prints and loans us our own money and charges us interest. (4)A true patriot also educates the people and legislators that paying income tax on ones salary is a form of slavery and must be stopped.
how to be patriotic
New Day, Love the heart you put into your hub. We look for more. Great to see so many positive comments. Patriotism births from the heart and grows for and because of the core of why and what our great country was created upon. NOT to follow blindly but to create changes in our peaceful, legal ways...VOTING!
In honor of those serving our country THEN...NOW and ALWAYS, we PRAY FOR YOU, SALUTE YOU and SUPPORT YOU!
Please do stop by and check our our hubs from "Roxie and Blanche".
Dissent is patriotic. If you believe that your freedoms are threatened don't be afraid to rise up. Our country was founded on dissent from England after all.
"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it." - Edward R. Murrow
nice
I remember feeling the most patriotic I have felt in a long time this last 4th of July.. when the Helicopters flew over before the fireworks. That was a cool feeling.
Towards the top when you say "Images of the Blue Angels are Patriotic", it would be nice to actually see an image of the Blue Angels instead of the Italian jet team the Frecce Tricolori.
wow great hub
Love this hub, it will be enjoyable to apply those suggestions especially with my kids. I also think that one of the best way to show your patriotism is by teaching your children the importance of their heritage and the constitution.
This helped me get ideas for my essay. Thanks New Day
awesome
This helped me with my essay also. I had 89 words over then I was aupposed to have, so I had to go back and erase some. I felt sad after, lol. I was only supposed to go up to 300 words. But when I first counted, I had 389. Funny huh?
it also helped me with an essay i was struggling. thank you. you also showed me how i can show patriotism.
